Opposition rankings measure how well each team defends a specific stat category, ranked 1 through 30 from season-long defensive statistics. Ranks 1-10 are tough matchups, 11-20 neutral, and 21-30 favorable. They add the matchup context hit rates miss, because a player's recent form means something different against the league's best defense than against its worst.
How opposition rankings work
An opposition ranking orders every team by how much of a specific stat it allows, based on season-long defensive statistics. The ranking is per category: a team has one rank against points, another against rebounds, another against pitcher strikeouts, because defenses are not uniformly good or bad.

Category and position context
The per-category structure is what makes rankings useful. A basketball team can protect the rim well while bleeding three-pointers, so it might rank tough against points in the paint and favorable against threes; in baseball, a team can be stingy against power while striking out constantly, a tough matchup for a hits prop and a great one for a strikeout prop at the same time.
Position matters within the category too. A defense that handles guards but struggles with wings offers different matchups to different players even in the same game, so the closer the ranking sits to the specific player and stat you are researching, the more it tells you.
Pace and volume effects
Rankings describe efficiency against a stat, but props are counting stats, and counting stats need opportunities. A fast-paced team creates more possessions and therefore more raw chances for everything, while a slow team can suppress a stat simply by shortening the game.
The trap is a favorable-ranked team that plays slowly: the matchup is soft per opportunity, but there are fewer opportunities. Pace works the other way too, where a tough defense in a fast game can still concede plenty of raw production. Read the ranking and the expected game environment together.
Combining rankings with props research
Rankings answer the question hit rates cannot: who were those recent games against, and who is tonight's opponent? A 70 percent L10 built against favorable matchups facing a top-five defense tonight is a weaker case than the raw number suggests.
The order of operations: hit rate against tonight's actual line, then the opposition rank for that exact stat, then the price. Favorable matchups are often already priced in, so the interesting finds are disagreements, like a soft matchup the line has not moved for. Matchup data sharpens a bet case; it never is one by itself.
Frequently asked questions
Is a favorable matchup enough reason to bet the over?
No. A 21-30 ranked opponent improves the context, but the player's own form, role, and the price still decide the bet. Books see the same rankings, so obviously soft matchups are usually reflected in the line already.
Why use season-long data instead of recent defensive form?
Stability. Defensive performance over a few games is dominated by noise, opponent quality, and injuries, while a season-long sample reflects the defense's real level. The cost is slower reaction to true mid-season changes, which is worth checking manually when a defense's personnel changed materially.
Do opposition rankings apply to pitcher props?
Yes. The opposing lineup is the opposition for a pitcher: a team that strikes out at a high rate is a favorable matchup for a strikeout over, and a contact-heavy, patient lineup is a tough one. The same 1-30 logic applies with the roles reversed.
